Becoming Grateful Day 12: Time to Be Grateful - Set a Gratitude Timer

Today's idea is really simple and straight forward:  Set a Gratitude Timer.

Use a timer in your house, or on your cell phone or your desktop at work.  Set it for as often as you'd like.  Maybe start with 1 hour intervals.

When the timer goes off, take a moment of silence and think about something you are grateful for.  You could think about things you're grateful for that happened a while ago or things that happened just that day.  It's really up to you on what you think about during your moment of gratitude.  I bet that as the day goes on you will also find more and more reasons to stop and remember things you are thankful for.

If you work on this habit for a few weeks, I'm sure your mind will be so well trained that the things you think of will come instantly.  (It kind of reminds me of the Pavlov's' dogs study.)

Here's a really great reason to focus on gratitude through the day:

"Gratitude puts situations into perspective.  When we can see the good as well as the bad, it becomes more difficult to complain and stay stuck."  (from unstuck.com)

Each time your timer goes off, seriously take the time to think about what you are thankful for.  You might find it easy when the timer 'dings' to just respond either in your mind, or out loud.  Don't put it off for 5 more minutes.  The snooze button is not allowed here!

This is another idea you could try if you have younger children.  Use it as a way to break up the activities of the day.  Or set a 'mental timer' that every time your children move to the next thing, you all try to think of something you are grateful for and share it.

This goes along with the same idea of 'practice grateful thinking'' from day 7.  We are what we think, and also what we say.  Have fun with this one!
